EXPLORING UKRAINIAN
IDENTITY:
GENDER, ETHNICITY, AND STATEHOOD
The University of Torontos Centre for Russian and East European
Studies (CREES) seeks to bring together aspiring young scholars
for two days of presentations and intensive discussions of a broad
spectrum of issues related to the study of Ukrainian identity. This
interdisciplinary symposium is intended to provide an invigorating
experience for researchers shaping the future of Ukrainian scholarship,
as well as an opportunity for graduate students to become better
acquainted with future colleagues in the profession.
Leading scholars in the field will participate and respond to student
presentations.
Graduate students in humanities and social sciences are invited
to participate in the symposium, to be held in Toronto on March
12-13, 2004.
CREES invites papers that explore the theme of Ukrainian identity
broadly construed.
Submissions can focus on a wide variety of topics including, but
not limited to, the following:
- national identity in an era of globalization
- nation-building and civil society
- contestation of national identity and foreign policy making
- language and identity
- ethnicity and culture
- Ukrainian identity in Diaspora
- gender and nationalism
- construction of a gender identity in mass culture
- role of media in shaping Ukrainian identity
- quest for identity in contemporary Ukrainian literature
- historizing national identity
Graduate students at both M.A. and Ph.D. levels and recent Ph.D.
recipients are encouraged to submit proposals. To be considered
as a candidate for presentation, please submit a one-page abstract
outlining the paper's thesis, scope, and potential conclusions,
as well as a curriculum vitae by January 15, 2004.
Submissions must be made via email to ukrainian.identity@utoronto.ca.
Authors whose papers are selected will be notified by February 10,
2004;completed papers will be due no later than March 1, 2004.
Presenters should seek external funding. Limited travel grants may
be available for participants who cannot obtain full external funding.
